Work Text:

Yamato sighed, massaging his forehead to try and rid the headache that was forming because of his favourite person, his Senpai, Kakashi.

“You want me to train Naruto for another three weeks? While you sit and read your books?”

“I’ll be supervising, not just reading.” Kakashi waved his arm, as if swatting away Yamato’s doubts on his lack of contribution.

“Sure, sure, Senpai. You are treating me to ramen tonight though.” Yamato could at least try to get something out of this extra work.

Kakashi’s eye creased, he was smiling, “Just this once.”

Before Yamato could say anything further, Kakashi vanished and he was left in his apartment alone once again. Kakashi rarely visited Yamato’s apartment, preferring to spring work on him as he’s returning from a mission or out buying groceries so this visit stirred something inside Yamato, something he’d been trying to bury for years.

His body betrayed him, he could handle hiding his emotions as that’s how he was brought up but his body didn’t catch that memo when it came to Kakashi. Yamato quickly found himself on his bed, palming over his growing erection. He hated this, hated how much of an effect Kakashi still had on him all these years later.

As a young kid in ANBU, Yamato thought his crush was just admiration, appreciation for his Senpai. It wasn’t until it lasted for a few more years that Yugao finally approached him about it. That was when he learnt about love and that it wasn’t just respect for Kakashi, but want, lust, desire. He secretly cursed Yugao for opening his eyes to the truth, he could have just continued following Kakashi thinking nothing more of the ache in his heart and swirling in his stomach.

More than 10 years had passed since his feelings started and what had he done about them? Nothing and he didn’t want that to change. Kakashi had never shown any interest in him, or anyone else for that matter, and he wasn’t about to force his feelings onto his Senpai.

“Fuck.” Yamato groaned as he came in his pants. He was pathetic, just touching himself over fabric and thinking of Kakashi was enough to make him cum. Reluctantly, he got up and showered, going for another round as thoughts of what Kakashi might look like under him flashed through his brain. He obviously didn’t last long this time either, cumming in his hand before washing himself off.

Oh he was down bad and it just seemed to get worse as the years rolled on by.

……………………………

Was Yamato seeing this right? Kakashi was… early for their evening meal? Was he dreaming?

“Tenzo, nice of you to join me.” Kakashi waved, putting his book into his vest pocket. He was still wearing the jonin outfit, no surprise there, Yamato wasn’t sure Kakashi even owned clothes outside of the uniform.

“It’s Yamato now, Senpai. And are you feeling ok? You’re early?” Yamato wore some cargo pants and a t-shirt, something that was easy to change in and out of in case of an emergency, always practical.

“I didn’t have much to do this afternoon, don’t look so shocked.” Kakashi flashed a smile, well as much of a smile as you can see while wearing a mask.

The pair entered Ichiraku Ramen and ordered, general chatter flowed between them of their recent missions, Naruto’s training and the like. Once food arrived, a comfortable silence fell and Yamato made sure to avoid looking at Kakashi, respecting his privacy whilst eating. He had accidentally seen Kakashi’s face many years ago during a mission and although it was a split second, it was ingrained into his memory. The way his nose goes up slightly at the end, the singular mole near his lips that he’d love to kiss, the way—

“Yamato, earth to Yamato.” Kakashi snapped Yamato out of his daydreaming. “What’s got you so lost in thought, hmm?”

Of course Kakashi would notice and ask, how stupid of him to let his mind wander and, oh shit, he had thought of Kakashi too much and could feel the blood going south. “Ah it’s nothing, what were you saying?”

Kakashi raised his brow but thankfully decided to not pursue it any further. “I was saying, I think you should really consider moving out of that old place of yours. Isn’t it a bit cramped in there?”

“Hm? Oh, it’s pretty good for just me. I don’t need much space honestly, plus I think I’m away on missions too often to warrant a nicer location that would simply fill with dust.”

“What about if you take anyone home?” Kakashi asked.

Yamato coughed, caught off guard, a furious blush covering his entire face. “S-Senpai!”

Kakashi shrugged, “You’re a young, handsome man, it’s bound to happen.”

“I-I don’t really… I’m not-“ Yamato stuttered, not even knowing how to respond. Being told he was handsome by Kakashi was short circuiting his brain.

“How about Shizune? She’s single, although I am pretty sure she’s a lesbian so maybe not. Oh or there’s Gai, I know he’s into guys.” Kakashi rambled on.

“I’m ok, really!” Yamato waved his arms dramatically, face burning bright red, he couldn’t believe he was having this conversation with the subject of his desire. “But how about you, surely you have people lining up for a chance, who wouldn’t?” Yamato continued, trying to keep the conversation away from himself.

Kakashi paused, for what felt like forever, “Are you suggesting you would line up?”

“Senpai, Please stop teasing me.” Yamato sighed, saying anything else would be an admission of his feelings.

Kakashi cocked an eyebrow, it had been a genuine question but it seemed Yamato didn’t feel like saying anything further. Now, Kakashi wasn’t stupid, he knew his old teammate acted differently with him compared to others… but was that just their bond or was it something more, he wasn’t sure.

“I think you should try lining up.” Kakashi winked.

Before either of them pushed things further, Kakashi got up out of his seat, put some ryo down and headed out.

“See you around!” And with that he was gone.

It was always, always this way. Kakashi would say something, making Yamato think he returned his feelings, just for Kakashi to run off at the first available opportunity. Yamato knew he should be used to this now, he’d been around Kakashi for years, he was just a tease, just a flirt, not actually interested.

Using the ryo Kakashi had left (and some of his own because of course Kakashi hadn’t left enough to cover the full cost), he paid and, feeling confused over their interaction, headed back towards his apartment. Kakashi’s words swirling through his mind, ‘Of course I’d line up, I’d be first in line.’ Yamato thought to himself.

“Yamato sensei!” A voice called behind him, Sakura smiled brightly as she walked over, “I never see you out of your uniform, what’s the occasion?”

“Oh, Sakura, nothing really, I was just having dinner.”

“A date?” Sakura raised an eyebrow knowingly.

Yamato’s cheeks flushed at the question, “N-no! Just dinner with a friend.” He wished it was a date, and wished more than anything Kakashi saw him that way.

“Hehe, you’re quite easy to read sometimes, you like them even if it wasn’t a date.” Sakura looked around, trying to scope out who could be the one holding her Captain’s affection.

Yamato sighed, “You’re too smart for your own good, it wasn’t a date but yes I might be… interested in this person.”

That seemed to be the best news Sakura had heard for months, she immediately grinned, “You have to tell me everything! Will you tell me who it is? Do I know them?” She questioned, eyes sparkling with excitement.

He shook his head, “I think that’s enough excitement for one day, maybe I’ll tell you another time, ok?”

Sakura folded her arms, “Alright, fine, but you have to tell the rest of us about them sometime. I know Kakashi Senpai would love to know.” She smiled before heading off, leaving Yamato stood there with the realisation he may just have shot himself in the foot.

……………………………

It was safe to say that Yamato barely slept that night, each time he finally drifted off, his thoughts were full of Kakashi in… rather compromising positions, with a lack of clothing. He willed himself to wake up each time, not wanting to give into his desires. He didn’t mind if his body needed a release now and then, it was normal after all, but thinking of his trusted, closed friend in such a way, day in and day out, made him feel guilty.

Yamato groaned as he looked at the clock: 05:08, at least he still had a few hours before he was supposed to meet up with the team. He reluctantly got out of the bed, threw on some casual clothes and headed out onto his balcony to tend to his plants, a little bit of watering, one plant needed repotting, a bit of sweeping was done too.

“Yo.” A voice came from behind him, he’d been so engrossed in his hobby that he hadn’t noticed anyone approaching.

“K-Kakashi?” Yamato spluttered out, turning to see the copy-nin sitting on the balcony railing, making himself right at home.

“The plants are doing well, ever considered quitting the shinobi life and working at the Yamanaka’s Flower Shop?”

“Senpai… I appreciate the comment but it’s six in the morning, what are you doing here?” Yamato took off his gardening gloves, trying to brush away the soil that had got onto his clothes.

Kakashi shrugged, “I was walking past and saw you pottering about.”

Yamato signed, ‘just walking past’ sure, he never knew when Kakashi was actually being truthful with things like this. Wait… oh no, did Sakura figure out who he liked and told the others? No, no of course Sakura wouldn’t do that, Naruto maybe would but Sakura wasn’t the type. What if Kakashi maybe overheard him last night—

“Earth to Tenzo.” Kakashi put a hand on Yamato’s shoulder, tilting his head to look at his friend’s face, much closer than he needed to be.

Yamato jumped back, face flushing red, “Sorry, sorry, have you had breakfast? We could eat together.” He quickly headed into his apartment thinking of what food he could offer.

Kakashi followed behind him, “I could eat. What are you offering?”

“I’m not a good cook but I do have some things, I could try and put something together.” Yamato cursed himself for not having more ingredients right now, he typically ate food that was pre-made due to usually having a busy schedule, he couldn’t serve that stuff to Kakashi!

“Let me see, oh, I could cook us some omurice with the stuff you have.” Kakashi offered, looking over the ingredients.

“You can cook?” Yamato knew how stupid that sounded leaving his mouth, of course the child who had been left to fend for himself from the age of 6 had picked up cooking.

Kakashi smiled, “I’m no gourmet chef but I do think of myself as a pretty decent cook. Go sit, I’ll let you know once it’s ready.”

Yamato nodded and did exactly as he was told, watching Kakashi get to work on preparing the food. His eyes couldn’t help but wander over Kakashi’s body, his arms, his facial features that were hidden but still shaped under his mask, his incredible butt that the shinobi trousers did an excellent job of sculpting. He swore he wasn’t a pervert but being around Kakashi made him feel like one.

“Senpai, do you often make food for others?”

Kakashi shook his head, “I haven’t done this in years, consider yourself lucky.”

Yamato knew Kakashi didn’t mean anything by that comment but it didn’t stop his stomach from filling with butterflies. He decided to keep his mouth shut until the food was ready, not trusting himself to not spill his feelings for his Senpai.

“Here, I hope it’s not terrible.” Kakashi served the omurice to Yamato, quickly retreating back to the kitchen to make one for himself.

It didn’t take long for Yamato to notice the sauce on top looked very similar to a heart… actually, no, he was imagining things. ‘Maybe it was just the way the sauce had come out of the bottle’ Yamato thought to himself, why would Kakashi of all people draw a heart on his food? He was just overthinking, his brain trying to feed into his desire.

Shortly after, Kakashi joined Yamato at the table, tucking into his food, mask now pulled down so he could eat.

“You can look if you want to.” Kakashi said as if seeing his face was just an everyday occurrence.

Yamato shook his head, refusing to look over at the other man, “No, you choose to keep it hidden, it would be wrong of me to look.”

“Look at me, Yamato. I want you to see me.”

How could he resist after being told that? Yamato caved in and looked, his eyes taking in all of the beauty that was Kakashi’s face. Sure, years ago he had seen it briefly but this was different, this was him being shown willingly, purposefully.

“Beautiful…” Yamato muttered to himself.

“Don’t say stuff like that, I’ll get the wrong idea.” Kakashi said as he smiled, he smiled and Yamato was seeing it right in front of him, no mask hiding anything.

“Senpai it’s true, you’re beautiful,” Yamato repeated, unable to stop the words pouring out of his mouth. “And of course I appreciate this but why are you showing me?”

“I trust you, plus… nevermind, we should get ready for training” Kakashi’s cheeks had a light pink dusting, he was blushing. The copy-nin excused himself from the table, taking the dishes to the sink and waving before making a quick exit.

Yamato washed the dishes before getting dressed and heading out for the day, replaying their breakfast in his head: Who else had seen Kakashi’s face? What did ‘the wrong idea’ mean?

……………………………

“Yamato-taicho!” Naruto yelled, waving his arms enthusiastically, Sakura and Sai stood next to him waiting for their Captain to arrive.

Yamato smiled, he never expected, when being told he’d be helping with Kakashi’s team, that they would welcome him and accept him as quickly as they did. He was so proud of each of them, he could see why Kakashi was so attached to his team. They all had such different personalities, it was so refreshing for him to be around that (and not the strict ANBU).

“Good Morning, I didn’t know you both would be joining for the training too.” Yamato raised a brow at Sakura and Sai.

Sakura shook her head, “Oh no, no, we’re here just to support—“

“—I thought you said this was a mission?" Sai asked but was promptly silenced by Sakura’s hand covering his mouth, preventing him from saying anything else.

“Haha, stop being silly, Sai. We’re just here to watch and support Naruto’s training!” Sakura very firmly told him, poor Sai clearly hadn’t been told to be secretive about whatever they were referring to.

Yamato frowned, it thankfully didn’t seem to be anything serious with how Sakura was acting but it did make him curious as to what they were up to and who put them up to it.

“Let’s go! Let’s go!” Naruto excitedly yelled, pulling Yamato’s thoughts back to the mission at hand: training and more importantly, keeping the nine-tails chakra in check.

The pair trained for a few hours until it was the early afternoon and time for a break to let chakra replenish. Sakura had kindly brought some food and a blanket to have a picnic with everyone. An assortment of rice balls, some rather disgusting smelling food pills made by Sakura and some other random food bits. To nobody’s surprise, the food pills were left and everything else was demolished in record time. Naruto made quick work of most things put in front of him, even braving a food pill after being offered one.

“Yamato-taicho, I’ve read that picnics are usually a romantic gesture, what are your thoughts on that?” Sai asked, he was still learning the details of connections now that he was out of the Foundation.

Yamato nodded, “They are quite romantic, especially when paired with something else, a walk, some flowers and homemade food are good options. But picnics are also a good way to get closer to your friends or acquaintances in a platonic way, like we’re doing now.”

Sai nodded, “Flowers… What flowers are best for a date?”

As their Captain, he couldn’t bow out now. He may not have much experience with dating but wanted to help Sai as much as he could. “Asking Ino is the best choice, since she works with flowers and understands the meanings behind them more than me. But if you just want my opinion then I would say roses and tulips are excellent, romantic choices.” His mind deciding to torture him by flashing up an image of Kakashi with a bouquet of flowers.

‘Shit, focus Yamato, focus, now is not the time!’ He thought to himself.

Sai pondered for a bit, “I see… Who would you take on a date?”

At this question, Yamato’s cheeks flushed bright red, “Um, that’s-that’s not important to the conversation!”

Naruto jumped up, “Yamato-taicho likes someone! He’s in love!”

“No getting away today!” Sakura mischievously grinned, oh what a trouble causer, she’d set this up after their encounter last night.

“Shush, all of you! This information is not relevant at all.” He had to try extra hard not to stutter, trying his best to remain professional (and failing massively).

Sakura shook her head, “This information will help us grow as a team, help us get closer to one another. Is it someone we know?”

“This has nothing to do with growing as a team, come on, it’s time to get back to training!” Yamato stood up, trying to walk back towards the training area, all three of the ninjas jumping up to block his path.

“You have to tell us!” Sakura and Naruto said in unison.

Yamato signed, this wasn’t going to end anytime soon, “Ok, you can ask one question and then that is the end of it.” If he couldn’t get them to drop it, then giving them a tiny bit of information might help satisfy them for the time being.

The trio whispered amongst each other for a short time, Naruto ended up looking shocked, Sai nodded and Sakura looked determined.

“Our one question is…”

Yamato swallowed, nerves filling his stomach. He may be a shinobi, he may have grown up in ROOT and then ANBU, he may be able to hide most of his emotions but he was never good at hiding love.

“Is it Kakashi-Sensei?”

Yamato’s world began to spin, his whole body getting hot, he couldn’t even formulate a sentence. How, how was it so obvious that this trio had figured it out within weeks of knowing him? He instinctively formed a wooden dome barrier surrounding him which separated him from the trio.

Naruto’s voice could still be heard, “It is Kakashi-Sensei!” which was followed by a squeal of excitement from Sakura.

“What’s Kakashi-Sensei?” That voice… Oh no, oh no no no, the one man that Yamato didn’t want hearing any of this just had to show up right now. Yup, it was definitely Kakashi outside of the barrier.

‘Someone please kill me now.’ Yamato thought to himself, turning himself into a ball on the floor, his head in his hands. Should he just teleport away from here? That would be easiest but Kakashi knew where he lived… ok maybe teleporting away wasn’t an option.

There were some muffled words exchanged between everyone outside, Yamato couldn’t quite make it all out. Someone knocked on the wooden structure a few times. Yamato couldn’t move, he knew he was pathetic, he knew he just needed to be open and honest with Kakashi and deal with the rejection but his body was frozen. He was content just admiring from a distance, just being his friend, he didn’t want anything to change.

“Open up, Tenzo. The others have gone...” Kakashi waited a little while before continuing, “Talk to me.”

The wooden structure began retracting, Yamato coming into view slowly as he rose to his feet. “I’m sorry, Senpai, if this makes things awkward, I can speak to the Hokage and—“

Wait, wait. There were lips on his… Kakashi’s lips were on his. Kakashi was kissing him.

“Stop talking.” Kakashi whispered against his lips, kissing Yamato again, hands holding his face. When the pair separated, there was a silence that fell between them, confusion washing over Yamato’s face.

“What?” Was all Yamato could say, he was dreaming, right? He had to be dreaming. However the taste of blueberries on his lips made him realise, this was real. Kakashi had just kissed him.

Kakashi stepped back, admiring the sight in front of him, Yamato’s bright red face, lips glistening, eyes wide with confusion. “I didn’t think the kids would take it that far.” He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

“What?” That seemed to be the only word Yamato could get out right now, his brain short-circuiting.

“I asked them to find out who you were interested in.”

Yamato let out a laugh, “You are ridiculous, really, Senpai. You couldn’t have just asked me?”

Kakashi had the cutest little frown on his face, “Would you have answered me truthfully?”

“Ah, good point.” Yamato put one hand behind Kakashi’s neck pulling him closer, his previous embarrassment mostly gone, and connected their lips again. He knew damn well he would never have told Kakashi without this incident happening. The world melted away around them as they kissed, Kakashi’s hands finding their way to Yamato’s waist and squeezing.

“S-Senpai!” Yamato yelped at the sensation.

Kakashi smiled, “You’re irresistible. Did you know you’re clueless when people flirt with you? I’ve been trying for years… But I suppose that’s part of your charm.”

Yamato opened his mouth to reply but decided to just kiss Kakashi, again. ‘Trying for years’, 'Irresistible’, he couldn’t believe that the one he loved was saying these things, about him of all people.

There were some sounds coming from behind Kakashi in the distance, Yamato glanced over Kakashi’s shoulder and spotted the trio, who got him in this position in the first place, badly hiding in some trees.

Kakashi sighed, “Sorry, I did tell them to go. Anyway… where would my boyfriend like to go for dinner tonight?”

“Boyfriend?!” Yamato’s face turned a new shade of red, probably the brightest Kakashi had ever seen.

“I mean, if you want to be.”

“Yes, yes of course, yes I do.” Yamato stuttered out, knowing he looked like an absolute fool right now.

Kakashi smiled once again, placing a chaste kiss on Yamato’s cheek before covering his face and signalling to the teens that they could come back.

It didn’t take long for the teens to arrive by their sides again, all of them looking between their two Captains in wait.

“What?” Kakashi asked.

“Are you both dating now?” Naruto’s eyebrow raised.

“Yes, mission successful, you three.” Kakashi patted each of them on the head, pleased with how things had turned out.

“Will you take Yamato-taicho on a date and buy him flowers?” Sai asked, thinking back to his previous conversation during their picnic.

Kakashi looked over to his, still very flustered, boyfriend. “Maa, maybe Yamato should be the one to take me on a date.” He said as he shrugged his shoulders.

“You still owe me for most of last night’s dinner!” Yamato sighed.

“Wow Kakashi Sensei, you really are stingy. Go take Yamato-taicho on a date right now!” Naruto started pushing the new couple away, “He wants roses and tulips, a walk, a picnic and definitely Ichiraku Ramen too!” Naruto continued, shooing the pair.

Kakashi let out a small laugh, “Ok, ok, got it. Oh and… Don’t come knocking tonight, you won’t want to witness that.”

“Senpai!” Yamato wanted to explode from the implications of that wording, he had to restrain his thoughts from getting out of hand before they got home.

“What does that mean-“ Sai was cut off once again by Sakura who was promptly taking him and Naruto away from their teachers.

Now that Kakashi and Yamato were alone, Kakashi pulled down his mask and smiled, “I guess… we should do what the kids said. Did you want to come with me to Yamanaka’s Flower Shop?”

Yamato gave Kakashi another kiss before shaking his head, “It might be romantic but I feel you’ll just make me pay again.” He took Kakashi’s hand in his and started walking, “Spending any time with you is perfect. Although maybe we should go back to yours as you said my place was too small yesterday.”

In a second, they had teleported to Kakashi’s place, hands wandering all over each other’s body, mouths apart only for brief breaths. It didn’t take long for them to be naked and wrapped in each other’s arms, their love filling the room. Years of pining over each other coming to fruition.

It was no shock that the pair didn’t make it to training the next day.
